Rebacca Harrison

Public Speaking & Debate

Rebecca Harrison is currently studying linguistics and French at the University of Texas at Austin. Starting from her freshman year of high school, Rebecca fell head-over-heels in love with speech and debate and dedicated the next four years of her life to competing at the state and national level in a multitude of different events, with her specialty being in public speaking and speech-writing. In her senior year, she was elected to the president of her high school public speaking and debate team, during which time she acted not only as a competitor, but also as an assistant coach.

Through this class, Rebecca aims to teach your children how to communicate effectively, builds strong arguments, and disagrees with one another amicably. The primary goal of speech and debate is not to teach children to win arguments and earn trophies, but rather how to look at the world from different perspectives and understand others’ points of view. By cultivating a classroom environment of positivity and respectful dissent, Rebecca intends to accomplish this very goal. It has always been her personal, firmly-held belief that nothing more perfectly captures the essence of the human spirit than effective and thoughtful communication, so it is Rebecca’s hope and intention to pass along her love of speech and debate to the next generation of leaders.

Dr. Taylor Schoberle

Biology Instructor

Taylor received her Master’s and Ph.D. from MD Anderson UTHealth Graduate School in Houston, TX. Her work while in graduate school focused on fungal genetics and toxin production. After graduate school, Taylor was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in New York through the NIH that trains postdoctoral scholars in active learning techniques for future teaching careers. Her postdoctoral research focused on bacterial genetics and virulence factors. Taylor is currently teaching science to majors and non-majors at St. Edward’s University, in addition to assisting with several introductory and upper-level science courses at the University of Texas.

Taylor uses a combination of lectures and active learning to help students grasp the material and practice critical thinking. Hands-on activities are typically included in Taylor’s curriculum because evidence has shown that students better understand and retain information when working through problems in an active manner. Students should take this class to get a basic foundation in biology. This will help them prepare for pre-AP and AP biology courses in high school, hopefully making the school year less stressful and more fulfilling. This class will be geared towards pre-AP content and will cover four main topics in biology: Genetics, Cellular Systems, Evolution, and Ecological Systems.

Rory McDougal

Computer Programming Instructor

My name is Rory McDougal and I will be the Programming Instructor for the Scratch Classes 2020 summer. I am excited to work with your children to explore and discover how programming computers can be fun. Understanding technology has been an invaluable skill for me throughout life and I have a deep passion for sharing this understanding with kids. Programming is a valuable way to develop critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities. Not everyone will grow up to be a programmer but everyone can benefit from the problem solving experience programming provides.

In the classes, we will be exploring programming in a conceptual way. We will start with simple projects and work towards creating more complex stories and games. Our goal is to generate interest in computing and provide experience solving problems with technology. Scratch is an amazing programming language designed specifically for kids by MIT. Please visit the website at http://scratch.mit.edu to learn more about the language.

I am a student at UT Austin studying mathematics, and will be studying mathematics next year at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In high school, I scored a 36 Composite on the ACT, and almost perfect score on the SAT, as well as qualifying for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) three times. Additionally, I coached a Mathcounts team in 2017, and they qualified for the State competition. Throughout my studies, I found that learning how to learn was the most important skill. In my class, I will teach my students to learn how to learn by teaching problem solving skills, educational maturity, and study skills. After taking my class, it is my hope that my students will be able to not only raise their test scores, but also know how to learn more efficiently and to approach education with a mature mindset.

I will teach keeping in mind the different types of questions presented, the most heavily weighted content, and will also include testing strategies that I personally used.
